Stevenage Beer & Cider Festival – International Bar

There are a lot of beers that we haven’t had on offer before at the International Bar, so it’s an exciting line-up for 2018. It includes beers from Belgium, Germay and the Netherlands but also from the USA, Norway and from the Bohem Brewery in, er, London! There are beers on draught as well as in bottles so come and say hello to the International Bar!

Blond Achel 8 33cl Belgium A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium! This blond, flavourful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and re-fermenting in the bottle.
Cereal Killer Arcadia 10 355ml USA Brewed in the tradition of an English barley wine, Cereal Killer offers an explosion of full-bodied, liquid goodness. Robust malty flavours converge with caramel, toffee, molasses and dark fruit notes to produce a remarkably complex yet palate-pleasing beer. Its intense malt character is complemented by a subtle citrus finish from the hops. With cellar-aging Cereal Killer’s flavour evolves further, developing a sherry-like aroma and flavour similar to a cask-aged port. Winner of the Gold Medal for Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beers at 2009 GABF.
Celebrator Ayinger 6.7 33cl Germany Celebrator has a creamy head of tight bubbles contrasting beautifully with its profound dark robe. It is full-bodied and velvety from half a year’s aging. Although it is strong, it is not overpowering. There is a wonderful and complex balance between the various malts, the alcohol and the subtle hops. A complex fruitiness of roasted malt and whole hop flowers make Celebrator great as a party drink with friends and family at celebrations. Despite its richness, it has a faintly smoky dryness in the finish.
Jahrhunder Bier Ayinger 5.5 50cl Germany This beer was first brewed in 1978 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brewery. It has a golden-yellow colour with a slightly flowery yeast, honey-ish aroma, tastes a little spicy and is full-bodied in initial taste, mild before swallowing and soft with a refined sparkle and fades with a well-balanced hint of bitterness. It is an especially drinkable and harmonious beer.
Kindl Weisse Berliner 3 33cl Germany Light golden in colour, extremely sour with a light bodied wheat character.
Druid Bohem 5.7 30L UK It may come from London but it’s made with 100% Czech ingredients. Caramel, coffee, oats and hints of malt make an appearance in this winter beer, a black lager with a full-bodied taste. Druid left a big impression with those who aren’t dark beer fans, finding it surprisingly moreish. Why not give it a go yourself?
Jan Amos Bohem 4.9 30L UK Another beer made with 100% Czech ingredients from this North London brewery. This is their interpretation of a classic Czech pilsner.
Boon Framboise Boon 5 37.5cl Belgium Framboise (Raspberry) Boon is a traditional Belgian Lambic fruit-beer. It is brewed according to the traditional Lambic style of spontaneous fermentation. Only fresh raspberries (25%) and wild cherries (5%) are used for this Lambic beer. Like Boon Kriek this is brewed in Lembeek, the village that gave Lambic its name.
Boon Kriek Boon 4 37.5cl Belgium Kriek Boon is a traditional Belgian Lambic fruit-beer. It is brewed according to the traditional Lambic style of spontaneous fermentation. Only fresh cherries (25%) are used. Kriek Boon is slightly sweet, with the surprising natural fragrance of sour cherries and almonds. With only 4% of alcohol it is a perfect summer beer.
Curtius Brasserie {C) 7 375ml Belgium Curtius is a blond beer brewed with a number of premium quality products with a light taste and refreshing flavours. Mixed with different malts of barley and wheat, its base grants it a pleasant lightness while the addition of aromatic hop blossoms gives it a subtly bitter, flowery and fruity flavour. Its unique and progressive taste is the results of multiple fermentation steps, conducted over several months.
Angus Tripel Bronckhorster Brewing Company 8.5 33cl Netherlands A beer brewed in the style of a Belgian Tripel. An excellent example of the style. A perfect ensemble of fruit, bitterness, and sweetness.

Bio Ambree Gluten Free Brunehaut 6.5 33cl Belgium This beer pours a hazy light amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeasty, caramel malt. The flavour is light sweet, light sour with a dry yeasty, grainy malt, medicinal palate. Medium to light bodied with average to soft carbonation.
Bio Gueuze Cantillon 5 37cl Belgium The world’s classic Gueuze. A blend of one, two, and three year-old lambics creates a second fermentation in the bottle. The champagne of Belgium.
Petrus Dubbel Bruin De Brabandere 6.5 33cl Belgium Petrus Double Brown Ale is a top-fermented dark beer. Brewed with pure spring water and carefully selected hops and malts. The dark beer with its subtle and slightly caramelized flavour is preferably served cool.
Bruxellensis De La Senne 6.5 33cl Belgium This beer is conditioned in the bottle for 4 months before release using 100% Brussels Brettanomyces yeast. It’s amber coloured with copper reflections, very fruity (pineapple and red fruits), sustained by hop flavours and complex notes of old leather. In spite of its strength its dry and bitter finish makes it a surprising thirst-quencher.
Triple De Plukker 7.5 33cl Belgium Tripel Plukker is a blond top-fermented beer brewed with only one hop variety. This is a typical Belgian tripel with a smooth taste and not so high alcohol percentage which makes it easy drinking.
It was first brewed on March 14, 2015. It’s an orange coloured beer with a fine white head and has a malty nose with hints of ripe exotic fruit (banana) and yeast. It’s taste has a fresh-sweet start; full flavours with ripe fruit (banana), malt and yeast and a soft finish with some bitterness.
Simplex De Ranke 4.5 20L Belgium Despite Simplex being an ale, it has all the characteristics of an old-styled pils. It is a blonde, unfiltered, unpasteurized, hoppy and bitter beer that remains low in alcohol. Resulting in a straw blonde, highly drinkable beer with plenty of flavour and character. Taste: Refreshing, light and with a firm bitterness
Doesjel Drie Fonteinen 6.9 375ml Belgium This is a blend of 1, 2 and 3 year old lambics. It is fermented and lagered in oak vessels. This beer has no head, just like lambic. The lambic is brewed with 60% barley and 40% wheat using last year’s hops.
Surfine Dubuisson 6.5 33cl Belgium This beer is a traditional Saison and a typical regional product from the Province of Hainaut. It is brewed with 3 kinds of malt, 3 varieties of quality Belgian hops and fermented with 3 types of yeast.
Surfine is a golden blonde beer with 6.5% abv. This refreshing beer has a surprisingly balanced, slightly bitter taste. The aromas are strikingly complex and fruity aromas; citrus is the predominant note but there are flowery touches, reinforced by impressions of herbs and pepper. At the first tasting, a drily bitter character comes to the fore, but it’s never overwhelming. The aftertaste, with its slightly sour undercurrent, gives the beer a refreshing character and makes it easy to digest.
Monks Stout DuPont 5.2 20L Belgium This is a beer first brewed in the 1950’s by DuPont Brasseries. There were two test versions of Monk’s Stout, both at 5.2% abv. One was dry and roasty, and another is said to be a little more rounded. This will no doubt be something between the two.
Saison Bio DuPont 5 25cl Belgium A bottle conditioned Saison made from water, organic malt, organic wheat-syrup, organic hops, and yeast.
This is Brasserie DuPont’s Biére de Table. It smells like fresh bread and tastes full in the mouth and light on the finish.
Oak Barrel Stout Fordham & Dominion 6.1 35l USA Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is rich and smooth. A combination of seven different malts and two hops to create a delicious stout, that is dry-hopped with fresh vanilla beans and toasted oak to finish it off. The result is a stout with a bourbon barrel flavour.
Oude Gueuze Hannsens 6 37.5cl Belgium As with all Gueuzes, Hanssens is a mixture of several vintages to produce a lambic which is refreshingly fruity. This is the result of blending different lambics of different ages. The second fermentation takes place inside the bottles and therefore they are stored for minimum six months in constant temperature kept cellars.
Boscouli Het Anker 3.5 33cl Belgium This fruity and colourful Belgian beer contains water, barley malt, sugar, hop, yeast and 20% fruit juice. This dark pink and delightfully fruity brew is best served at 5 to 7°C in a matching beer glass.
Gouden Carolus Classic Het Anker 8.5 33cl Belgium Known as “The Emperor’s Beer” this is a top-fermented and bottle conditioned beer produced using traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.
Maneblusser Bok Het Anker 6.5 33cl Belgium This pale amber beer is brewed with two varieties of barley malt, wheat malt and oats. It is made with three types of hops and seasoned with curaçao. The result is a fine balance between bitter and sweet, with hints of ripe fruit. It tastes mellow, full-bodied and heart-warming. Ideal after a brisk autumn walk!

Floris Chocolat Huyghe 4.2 33cl Belgium Floris is a brand of the Huyghe Brewery (Dutch: Brouwerij Huyghe). The brewery was founded in 1906 in Belgium by Leon Huyghe in the city of Melle in East Flanders. The Floris Chocolate is a Belgian wit bier (wheat beer) flavoured with chocolate.
Floris Fraises Huyghe 3.6 33cl Belgium A Belgian wit bier blended with strawberry juice.
Floris Honey Huyghe 4.5 33cl Belgium A Belgian wit bier blended with honey which gives a lively, fruity and bitter sweet style of beer.
Floris Passion Fruit Huyghe 3.6 33cl Belgium A Belgian wit bier blended with passion fruit which give is it a tangy, tropical, sweet taste.
Pils Jever 4.8 50cl Germany A beer that is unique in taste. The secret lies in the water, which is still taken from the same well for over 100 years. This water is unusually pure and soft and that allows the brewer to add a touch more hops to create the Friesian-bitter taste that distinguishes Jever Pilsner from any other beer.
Grotten Sante Kazematten 6.5 33cl Belgium The Grottenbier was created by one of the greatest Belgian brewers, Pierre Celis. The aim of Grottenbier is to see what the influence of a constant low temperature, such as in a cave, does to the development of a beers taste. In 2002, Pierre sold the beer (name and recipe) to Brouwerij St. Bernardus, where it has been commercialized for the last ten years. When De Kazematten became a possibility, St. Bernardus immediately saw a new home for the Grottenbier and the dream of Pierre became reality with Grotten Sante.
Mosaic Hop Explosion Kees 5.5 33cl Netherlands This is a clear amber coloured beer with a medium sized white head. It has a fruity aroma of citrus and hops with notes of pine needles, basil and a hoppy finish.

Cassis Lindemans 3.5 25cl Belgium Lindemans Cassis is a lambic made from local barley, un-malted wheat, and wild yeast. After spontaneous fermentation the lambic is aged in oak. Blackcurrants are added creating a secondary fermentation and yielding ale of exceptional flavour and complexity.
Framboise Lindemans 2.5 25cl Belgium This is a clean natural tasting brew with undertones of fresh raspberries and a wonderful aroma.
Kriek Lindemans 3.5 25cl Belgium This is a sparking cherry flavoured brew that is smooth and refreshing. It’s also known as Foudroyante Kriek. Ingredients: Malt, wheat, 25% cherry juice, fructose, hops, cherry flavouring, sugar substitute, ascorbic acid, and yeast so it’s a bit more “artificial” than some of our Krieks.
Pecheresse Lindemans 2.5 25cl Belgium This is a golden peach lambic with a sparkling appearance and fruity taste. Why not compare it with the Timmermans Peche we have on tap?
Weisse Maisels 5.4 50cl Belgium Traditional weissbier made according to the old Bavarian style with the unmistakable character of the fine cellar yeast.
Porter Nogne 7 50cl Norway Dark malts provide flavours of coffee and dried fruit. This beer is made with Maris Otter, Munich, caramel, black malt, and chocolate malt; Centennial and Northern Brewer hops; English ale yeast, and the local Grimstad water.
Orval Orval 6.2 33cl Belgium This is an Abbey style amber beer. In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste. It is bottled at 5.2% ABV but can go up as high as 7.2% ABV after aging.

8 Rochefort 9.2 33cl Belgium This is an Abbey style dark beer and is the lower gravity cousin of Rochefort 10. Nicknamed “Spéciale” (’The Special’). The Rochefort 8 has a more tawny colour and a more pronounced aroma, with an even richer fruitiness (a slight undertone of fig?) and a little more spiced dryness, like that of a cake, which gives a balanced finish to the final notes.
Pater 6 St Bernadus 6,7 33cl Belgium This is an Abbey style chestnut coloured dark beer with a high fermentation and a full taste.
Prior 8 St Bernadus 8 33cl Belgium This is an Abbey style deep hazy-brown coloured beer with a big body and malt palate.
Christmas St Bernadus 10 33cl Belgium St. Bernardus Christmas Ale is the youngest descendant in the illustrious family of delicious Abbey Ales by Brewery St. Bernardus. This specialty beer of 10% abv is characterised by its deep dark colour, with a creamy, thick head and a full, almost velvety taste with a fruity nose. It’s a seasonal ale, brewed annually for the holiday season. The long winter nights are perfect moments to savour this ale with or without friends and to enjoy its unique, complex taste and after-taste.
West Coast IPA St Feuillien / Green Flash 8.1 33cl Belgium This beer is brewed both at Green Flash in the US as well as at St-Feuillien in Belgium. This Belgian edition is bottle conditioned and European malts are used in it’s production. It’s an Imperial IPA so expect a very pronounced hop character and some potency from the alcohol.
Neapolitan Milk Stout Saugatuck 6 355ml USA A perfect blend of classic dry stout character with brilliant flavours of Neapolitan Ice Cream. Experience the flavours of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry all in one glass – because sometimes ice cream just isn’t enough. This was the first international beer to sell out at our very first Stevenage Beer Festival so if you want to try it get in quick to avoid disappointment.
Weisse Tap 7 Schneider 5.4 50cl Germany With its amber-mahogany colouring and streaked with fine top-fermented yeast, this beer has a fine, persistent head that adheres well to the glass. It is pleasantly fruity with a typical top-fermented smell, an aroma of clove and nutmeg apple tantalizes the nose. On the tongue it is fresh, clean, full-bodied, harmonious and well-balanced. It finishes with a light, delicate taste of bitters leaving behind a sour impression.

Flemish Sour Slaapmutske 5 33cl Belgium Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and unsweetened. Sour ale from the north of Belgium the way it used to be.
Ambree d’Esquelbecq Thiriez 5.8 33cl France The first Christmas beer produced by Thiriez since 1997. Fewer hops than the Blonde; lightly toasted malts for colour, and a hint of spice.
La Maline Thiriez 5.8 33cl France A Belgian style dark ale, rich in aroma and flavour with good roasted notes.
Timmermans Kriek 4 15l Belgium Sweetish cherry beer.
Timmermans Peche 4.5 15l Belgium Lively and full of peach flavoured bubbles.
Poperings Hommelbier Van Eecke 7.5 33cl Belgium Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.
Leute Bokbier Van Steenberge 7.5 33cl Belgium Leute Bokbier is a dark, red, heavy beer, top fermented and bottle conditioned. The aroma and taste is unique and striking, not too sweet, but full and smooth on the tongue.
Kirsch Gose Victory 4.7 355ml USA A bold and bright step outside the norm, this new twist on an old-world German brewing process excites your senses with the sharp and sweet burst of fresh cherries. Effervescent and sublime, this session ale has an enticing and satisfying cherry fruit character.
